Draft Survey

A draft survey is a means of determining the weight of any materials being loaded into (or discharged from) a vessel. Our experienced and highly qualified professionals can conduct a draft survey on your behalf of clients and issue a draft survey report.

The vessel draft survey measures the displacement of the water both before and after the loading or unloading, with the resulting difference between the two displacements representing the weight of the cargo. Cotecna performs inspection according to approved international guidelines when determining the weight of the cargo and consider several key factors while carrying out surveys.

Our inspector can perform draft survey and protect client’s interests with long experience and expertise in this field. We issue a draft survey report containing all of the details obtained during the survey. You can use this report to verify quantity of the cargo.

Tank gauging (Bunker survey)

A bunker survey establishes the amount of bunker and lube oil onboard the vessel. These surveys are an important loss-prevention measure since documentation of bunker operations is required in the event of a dispute or claim.

Improper collection and distribution of bunker samples may risk the settlement of a subsequent claim in the event of a dispute. Our global network of third party marine inspectors have extensive experience conducting bunker surveys prior to and after time charter periods.

Vessel hatch and hold inspection / Water tightness

Buyers or sellers can request for hold and hatch inspection before loading. This inspection can guarantee that the cargo will not be contaminated by the material already in the hold, or affected by the defect of vessel. Nominated inspectors collect all the photographs, documents and reports during inspection they perform. We provide certificate of inspection after inspection is finished.

Hold Inspections

Inspector checks the hold’s condition before loading. Our inspectors carry out hold inspections like below.

  • Check that the hold is free of rust or paint
  • Check if there is sign of moisture or water damage in the hold or the inside the vessel.
  • Ensure that the hold is free of previous cargo remnants
  • Pay attention to cargoes that may cause problem due to quarantine requirements
  • Check ship’s log to verify whether there were harmful materials among previous cargoes.

Hatch Inspections

Improper ship’s hatch cover seals and securing arrangements may cause cargo defects. In order to protect any kinds of cargo defect for these reasons, our inspectors carry out hatch inspection like below.

  • Visually check hatch covers for water tightness and proper operation.
  • Pay attention to damage, holes and leak points of the vessel that may affect the quality of the cargo
  • Inspector can perform chalk, hose tests for Hatch inspection.

Visual Inspection

Visual inspections are requested to ensure that their cargo is loaded in good condition and to verify the quality and quantity are consistent with documents. Visual inspections also ensure that the cargo being shipped is the cargo that you have bought or sold.

Visual inspections are as follows:

  • Inspection for transportation (Ventilation, Dryness, Cleanliness, Cargo separation)
  • Check that randomly selected products are consistent with what stated on shipping documents, product specification and features
  • Verification for packing, marking, labeling, manufacture dates, batch numbers, expiry dates, shipping marks, packing lists, supplier certificates and labels
  • Inspection for time and date of loading, loading delays and reason for delays, description of loading equipments, weather conditions, rainfall, wind-waste, remainder on wharf.

Loading and discharge supervision services help you to guarantee the safety and quality of the products throughout the work.
